(1) ‘Cisco’ is the name the Indians gave to several varieties of fish found in the Great Lakes, commonly known as lake herring, bloater , cisco, and long-jaw.(2) Consider two such species, the shortnose cisco and the bloater .(3) Around 1835 a new type of lightly salted, lightly smoked bloater was first made at Yarmouth.(4) You can still get the famous Yarmouth bloater though.(5) Many a person has gone away smiling after eating one of these red herring, bloaters or kippers.(6) Yarmouth bloaters soon acquired a national reputation and the town remained in the top ten until the later 18th cent.(7) The smokehouse smokes anything that stands still for long enough; pheasant, ham hocks, bloaters , garlic, eel, sausages.
